Can the California Highway Patrol patrol residential streets and give citations.?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under residential design | 6 Comments »

I live in Ventura Ca and I see California Highway Patrol cruising around the city streets following cars doing illegal u-turns to pull people over for minor infractions on residential streets. I thought that CHP were designed for the freeway patrol and PD was for the city patrol. If CHP is patrolling our city streets who is patrolling our freeways??

Of course they can patrol those streets. You need to remember they are responsible for all roadways in the state. And the old argument that they are only for the "highway" isn’t right. Even if it was, a highway is defined as any road open to the public. CA vehicle code 360. It defines what a "highway" is:

"Highway" is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly
maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of
vehicular travel. Highway includes street.

Which are the tasks of an HVAC engineer in a building systems design office in some of the big countries?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under building design | 1 Comment »

Is it about heating&cooling loads, airflow, smoke exhaust systems, etc, calculations, drafting, editing?

Heating and Cooling loads
System design (determine which type of equipment would work best, i.e. direct expansion units, water cooled chillers, air cooled chillers)
Equipment Selection
Equipment layout
duct design and layout
piping design and layout
pump sizing if required
exhaust fans and exhaust duct routing for restrooms, etc…
controls for HVAC and chilled water systems including interface to a DDC system if required
drawing up the design sometimes
scheduling the equipment
writing the specifications
reviewing submittals during construction
help with estimating and material take-offs
answering Requests For Information (RFI’s) from contractors
evaluating bids
coordinating the design with structural engineers, architectual engineers and electrical engineers.
providing electrical engineers with the electrical information of the HVAC equipment

that is all I can think of right now

Any Photographers Out There Who Specialize In Shooting Jewelry?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under architectural photography | 2 Comments »

I read a variety of high end fashion magazines and Architectural Digest and see many beautiful ads of watches and jewelry. I am wondering if they are using high end DSLR’s and macro lenses or medium format digital. It looks like the lighting is so specialized. I have seen the variety of light boxes and light tents on ebay, but there is a lot more technical info to learn about photographing reflective products. Are there any books out that show step by step tutorials in shooting jewelry. Also, it looks like there is a variety of retouching tools utilized to get the pro look in ads. What is the best gear needed to learn jewelry photography? Thanks for any advice and help with this topic.

Lighting jewelry can be extremely difficult. The shiny surface on most of it means you have to take in to consideration the angles that the light is hitting it to get the best effect possible. Throw in a stone that can reflect light in hundreds of different ways (those fun little rainbows that diamonds make) and the challenges multiply immensely.

Look for books dealing in lighting, this is the key to shooting anything, but especially jewelry.

The ‘gear’ you would use actually depends on your preferences and budget. They make light tables where you can set your light underneath and light the piece from below, or you can use a lighting set up from the top that could use any number of lights.

I’m not really a commercial photographer, but I got to play with it in a class I took awhile back, if there’s anything else I can help you with, feel free to e-mail me.

Advice on Architectural AutoCAD Drafting field?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under architectural drafting | 3 Comments »

Hello, I am looking to change careers into cad drafting and would like some feedback, Is this work worth full-time or not, every cad job ive seen is 12-15hr part time, give me a break,no point, is this worth it and are their other cad type type that pay higher. Also it seems to me that architects do not find a lot of work, which directly effects drafters, compared to a large corporation. Need serious advice on this
Any feedback would be helpful
Thanks

Brian is exactly right, it use to be there were engineers, designers and drafters, today the drafters and designers have murged . engineers want designes handed to them for review, and they are there for guidance, but the designer comes up with the initial drawings. I have a associates degree in engineering technology, and it has helped me stay in this field, people with "drafting" skills are finding work harder to find. But i do make a descent living. and have for almost 20 years now. but thats becasue i realize autocad is not just a cad package. it is a productivity tool. making lines and circles is a drop in the bucket for what it can do. here we have it talking to SQL searver, Utilizing VBA were pulling general information that it uses to automate portions of our drawing process. and that portion is increasing all the time.

So yes AutoCAD can be a basis for a career, but it is not just about drawings. you have to design and automate.

Architectural Engineering or Architectural Design Technology ?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under architectural engineering | 2 Comments »

I want to apply to the coventry university they have Architectural Engineering and Architectural Design Technology , I would like to apply to the course that I will study designing and planing .
Which course does contain designing and planing ?

I am an architect living in Africa. I became architect and urban planner after I studied architecture and urban planning at university in architecture and urban planning. These days, architecture and urban planning disciplines are being given distinctively, and may be it will be difficult to become both architect and urban planner at one go. Any ways, if you join just architecture department you will become designer, and if you join urban planning department you will become planner. To be both, you have to join architecture and urban planning department. * These fields are so close that you can get you bsc. in one and msc. in the other. Good luck

What is this oldest of architectural innovations called?

Posted by admin on October 27th, 2009 and filed under architectural | 2 Comments »

There are buildings throughout the world that still use a simple construction for an entranceway that was used over several millennia by the ancient Egyptians in their buildings and temples. Of course, the modern counterparts have put to use all different kinds of materials that are available as a result of technological and enginerring advances and not the slabs of stone that Egypt’s masons and craftsmen employed. Other cultures and civilizations developed the more sophisticated entranceway that employed the rounded arch, but the innovation ("creative improvement") of the Egyptians was simply to place two massive slabs of sone several feet apart, and on top place a third massive stone slab that formed the passage. It is a rectangular passage primitive but functional, that people walk through that marks a stone gateway. What is this oldset of architectural innovations called?
