Is a triangular building design best for withstanding an earthquake?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under building design | 2 Comments »

Describe y or y not plz

Triangular structures are "stiff," i.e., they resist bending. However, the energy imparted to a building during an earthquake has to be dissipated somehow, and a stiff, rigid building actually has to be built stronger than one that can bend, which increases cost and limits the height of such a building.

Therefore, a less stiff building is actually more desirable, since it will also resist earthquakes, but provides a taller building for the same cost or materials.

Does anyone know of any? one thats cool and fun to play?

AutoCAD would be too hard for me. im looking for a game thats like sim city but instead you build houses….

thanks.
i just want the houses; not people on it….the sims would be out of the question. i do not want to take care of human characters.

Sims 3 or Sims 2 Are both Life Simulation Games that allow you to build your own house.

Sweden or Finland?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under architectural photography | 7 Comments »

I am currently thinking about taking a weeks holiday abroad. I am stuck on where to go to though. I am thinking of Sweden or Finland. I chose them as they are home to my favorite bands and i have kind of feel in love with there whole style and i think from what i have seen both places are beautiful. Where do you suggest I try first?

Also this would be my first trip abroad on my own as I am 22, but Im do want to travel alot and this would be a great start.

Also what do you think would be a good city to try. I was thinking that for Sweden i could try Stockholm or Malmo and for Finland i could try Helsinki. You guys and girls know any others i could look into.

One last thing, what are some good places to go to. I am really into photography so good architectural places would be fantastic

Sweden would definately be the given answer! ;)

No seriously, no offense to Finland but Sweden really is beautiful. Architecturally most Swedish cities are very beautiful and very unlike other large cities in the world and this is very much due to the lovely architecture. If that’s all you want to see then Stockholm is definately worth going to. Its a big city metropol known as the Venice of Scandinavia compromising all types of styles, cultures and architecture.

Malmö city centre is also nice and the big difference in architectural styles between southern and northern Sweden is very visible there (for a number of years Malmö along with Skåne belonged to Denmark and thus is influenced by the Danes). However, the city is not as big as Stockholm and outside city centre there just isn’t much to look at.

Then of course there’s Gothenburg. Now that’s known as the London of Sweden. It’s definately smaller than Stockholm but larger than Malmö. People visiting Gothenburg often speak of its friendly and hospitable people. The city compromises all kinds of shopping, dining and clubbing as well as a wide architectural style spectra ranging from 17th century to modern (take a look at the opera house!).

So take your pick!

Anybody know what the FIT fashion design home test consist of?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under home design | 2 Comments »

I plan on taking fashion design at the fashion institue of technology in the year 2010. Anybody know what the home test requires so I could get a head start? or is it always different every year?

Oh and according to the site..do we have to make the outfit we drew and show them or just draw and display the fabric?

I received a home test a few years ago. They give you a scenario for you to complete the home test. Mine was: A women is going on a vacation, she needs 4-5 looks for her vacation. So you have to do sketches and include fabric swatches (the more detailed the better). I believe you also have to write a essay telling about yourself, interest, goals, achievements. etc.

This could also helo you too, http://fitnyc.edu/html/admissions/HowDoIPrepareAPortfolio/index.html

I hope this helped, its good that your getting a head start.

is architectural engineering a mixture of designing and constructing a building?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under architectural engineering | 1 Comment »

Architectural Engineering involves all the specialties concerned;
Civil, Structural, Mechanical, (Heating & Plumbing), and Electrical.
(For projects of any significant size, the Architect co-ordinates the
work of his hired, sub-contractor, specialists in these fields.)
The Architect, and his sub-contracted Engineers usually also
supervise construction to assure compliance with plans & spec.s,
once that stage is reached.

How do I get an interior design license in Utah?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under interior design | 3 Comments »

I have a degree but not in Interior Design but have been doing my own design and for friends for years. I want to have the license so I can go in and make purchases on behalf of clients. How do I get an official license?
So someone below says all you need to do is get a business license and you don’t need a degree. I can definitely do that very easily – just form an LLC and get the license. Is there anything else I need to do and is this correct? I don’t need a degree or have to take some sort of course to get a certificate or something?

License for what. You don’t need a license, you need a tax id number and insurance.

You do NOT need a degree in a college discipline to start and operate a business. If your talent for design is good enough and you work hard and smart, you can run your own successful business. You need classes in Small Business Management, not design classes. Especially, because you have been doing your own design for years. Trust yourself. Apply for a Tax ID# and go into business. Advertise your craft (show some pictures of your work), create a web site, learn to sell yourself. GL DESIGNER!!!

Is it a good idea for an architect to get in to an healthcare firm?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under architectural firms | 2 Comments »

I am thinking of joining a healthcare firm which specialized in designing, engeerning and managing of health related projects (hospitals, spa, etc…), While at the moment I am working for a architectural firm with good salary. the reason for this is that I don’t really like sitting in front of pc and draw everyday. Anyway, regardless of the personal issue, could u say is it a good choice?

Given the information, the health care firm looks good. You appear to be working for an architectural firm, so the move to a health firm would be a move to an owner. The work you will be doing will be similar, but you will hire outside architects to do the real jobs. As a professional, the high compensation comes from firms that are low consumers of your professional services, in other words only few architects work for them.

Cheers and good luck!
