I am just starting to really get into photography, I had taken pictures a lot that turned out well with a smaller camera… but, I would like to step up and start using professional cameras.

What is best to start off with that is in the price range of 600 – 900
If it helps, I like photographing people… children, couples.
I do like taking landscape and architectural pictures, but i enjoy photographing people more.
just take better photos. the quality of the camera i have isnt all that great.

Canon XS, XT, XTi, XSi, T1i

Nikon D40, 60, 90

or another good choice for this price range is Nikon D60 with 2 lens 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR and 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor Lens for almost same price.Nikon D60 is easy to use and provide eacellent images.

you can get a pretty good digital SLR in that price range.

There is a brand new canon out, probably right at the top of the price range you suggest…

    which is the T1i

This model replaces the XSI model

With Nikon, there is a new d5000 I believe,

and the d60 is a pretty popular model.

If your serious about it then get a canon digital rebel xti!! I bought mine 3months ago and I love it! It just takes a while to remember the settings for the lighting. There about 500-600. I think the lens mainly has to do with the quality of the picture so get a 50mm instead of the standard 18-55mm. good luck!!
