Are there any universities in the UK where I can get a degree in Architectural Drafting Design?

Am I wasting my time in college for Architectural Drafting?

I’m in my first year of my architectural drafting class, but I have been looking at job sites and not seeing too many in this field. Is it because of the bad job market or because drafters and CAD designers are not needed?

The program is for a 2 year associates
And it is at a community college so it is a non-profit school

Architecture was hit pretty hard by the recession, because when money starts to dry up developers have to cancel their projects and they can’t afford to start new ones. No projects = no architects.

You can expect the number of available jobs to increase in the coming years as land development picks back up.

You should really consider upgrading your education to a Bachelors in Architecture at some point in the future.

Is it illegal in the state of Texas to use Architectural Drafting & Design in a business card?

Absolutely nothing illegal about it. If that’s what you do, that’s what you do. I used to do architectural design and drafting myself.

The only thing I would point out to you is that if you are NOT in fact an architect, make sure your clients realize that fact. Putting ‘Architectural Design & Drafting’ on a business card is one thing – misleading people into thinking you are an architect if you’re not is quite another thing. Could lead to lawsuits for misrepresentation.

is architectural drafting a dying field?

I’ve got less than a year and i’ll be certified as an architectural drafter, but since architects and engineers do much of the drafting themselves why do they need drafters to do the job for them. I don’t see the need to go into drafting when it’s done by the engineers and architects

It is only a dying field on a drawing table, and it is mostly done now on Computers.
To answer your question they may do rough drafts and leave it to the people like yourself, to do the fine and final work. Which will then be given to the builders on the work site.

What are the architectural drafting equipments and materials??

-a drafting table

-pencil-to do the light sketches

-set square–the 45 degree one for orthographic drawing and the 30/60 degree one for two point perspective

-maybe a protractor to double check

-and a dark blue pencil–to go over the outer lines thicker+sometimes shading

I just graduated from college with the AS degree in Architectural drafting, and I don’t have any other special skills other than this one.
I need to get a job.

How can I find a job, please let me know how to find it other than craigslist.

Ask your college for help and suggestions of contacts and all the possible ways you could use your training. Either your department or your job find office.

Do you know anyone who is working in drafting? Let them know you are looking . Let everyone know you are looking.

Have you contacted architects?

Meantime, add some more skills if you can, so you can be more flexible
or more useful or both. Learn more computer skills that you could use in an office, even if you were not drafting. (Database, spreadsheet, bookkeeping are always in demand).

Possibly a general contractor or a home builder could use your skills. Check with a homebuilders association or use the phone book.

Am I wasting my time with a drafting degree?

I am currently pursuing a architectural/civil drafting and design associates degree at a technical school. and then plan to attend Texas A&M to obtain my B.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural Engineering.
Am I wasting my time with the A.S., or will this prove beneficial to me in transferring to A&M, as well as in my career?
The AAS is basically a degree in how to use different CAD software. And the basics of materials, methods, etc.

I think you have an excellent Plan A. No doubt. You may want to explore transferring to Texas now. But if you are more than halfway through the AS program than it may be profitable to continue with the AS and keep it in your back pocket. The AS may get you a better job while you are pursuing the BE. Defiantly weigh all your options carefully. You may be able to go to Texas now and get your BE quicker. Who knows. GL
