I would like to know what is the latest, most Powerful Software on the market used by Architects to do AutoCad work, i.e. renderings of say a Commercial Building or Hotel etc.

My friend who’s an IT guy told me he had one that costs like $15K said it would take a long time to learn etc.

I would like to know the very best AutoCad Software out there so we can produce cool Architectural 3D renderings for Commercial Real Estate projects. For that reason, I am interested in The Best, Most Powerful software regardless of price. I don’t want a cheap version, just THE BEST professional version, used by the TOP architectural firms or 3D professionals out there.

I am currently using AutoCAD 2007. Also do not get the AutoCAD 2007 LT. This version of AutoCAD does not come complete with the 3D Renderings that you will need. Also do not get a student version which will be offered. This expires. Also AutoCAD 2005 is just as good and not as expensive.

I am thinking of joining a healthcare firm which specialized in designing, engeerning and managing of health related projects (hospitals, spa,etc…), While at the moment I am working for a architectural firm with good salary. the reason for this is that I don’t really like sitting in front of pc and draw everyday. Anyway, regardless of the personal issue, could u say is it a good choice?

Given the information, the health care firm looks good. You appear to be working for an architectural firm, so the move to a health firm would be a move to an owner. The work you will be doing will be similar, but you will hire outside architects to do the real jobs. As a professional, the high compensation comes from firms that are low consumers of your professional services, in other words only few architects work for them.

It depends on the firm, but most will sit down with a client and walk them through the process of designing a building to suit their needs.

They will produce construction documents so that the contractor can give a quote for building it, and get permits. Also – renderings to show a 3-d model of what the building will look like (many firms are incorporating 3-d design into their design development to allow them to coordinate things better.

They will also either deal with gettings the engineering discipline drawings necessary for a complete project – including structural, mechanical (HVAC & plumbing), electrical, and civil, or some firms (like the one I work for) have in-house architects, engineers, designers, and drafters. They also do construction management. They can take a project from conception through completion.

I am still a student and I have never really worked with a designer architectural firm. I have always wondered, what will it be like when i finally do start working as an architect. What should i expect. I still have 2 years left to finish up school. Please share your experiences. Thanks.

The first answer was right on (though a little cynical). If you’re worried about it, can you get your feet wet now while in school? Spend the summer in an office…or find out if you can do a professional internship during the school year and have it count for credit.

There isn’t much work to go around now…but if you can work for little money (or maybe free, but I don’t like that idea too much), I bet you’ll find a firm who wants your talents and inputs.

Contact as many as you can, call, email, etc. If you get no response or they aren’t hiring offer yourself for a position as an unpaid intern. It is hard for a company to turn down free labor.
