What are the basic fundamentals of fire safe building design?

Posted by admin on February 12th, 2010 and filed under building design | 2 Comments »

Compartmentalization of the building into fire resistant zones, so if a fire breaks out it cannot spread to adjacent zones.

Protection of building structure against the effect of a fire within a zone, so as to prevent collapse or failure of the zones.

Provision of fire alarm system with adequate and obvious notices showing emergency exits.

Emergency lighting to give adequate illumination in the event of main lighting failure.

Fire fighting equipment provided for tackling small fires, hose reels and sprinklers for larger fires.

Occupant training, what to do in case of a fire.

Provision of adequate and obvious fire escapes.

Good house keeping, no clutter, no rubbish.

Regular inspections to ensure that all of these provisions are maintained and used properly.

Web Design: Building a site weith memberships and store?

Posted by admin on January 13th, 2010 and filed under building design | 4 Comments »

I need to build a website were people can be a member: Log in, create a profile, provide us with shipping info, contact info, etc… This site also needs a shop/store section. I want my costomers to buy through the site. How do I program these and how do I adress this from a legal standpoint?

It will take a fair bit of time to build that site: it is similar to any kind of e-commerce.
There are packages you can use, such as joomla, drupal or os-commerce.
However, these packages are still for advanced coders who know what they are doing. But to be honnest, a progammer who knows what he is doing does NOT use these packages: too big, too inefficient, difficult to adapt to a particular case.
They do write it themselves.
A small job like yours can be completed in about three-four weeks (by a pro), and would be charged around 12-1800 us$. (That would be my estimated quote).
On the other hand, if you want to write it yourself, get a start with a login system: download "login script" from http://www.web2coders.com (free). Read it, understand it, and you will have a good starting base.
Good luck!

Whats the goverment building in Moscow that is half one design, and the other half another design? It was for?

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2009 and filed under building design | 4 Comments »

my history teacher told us about it and said that a few years ago when she was there she saw this building and it looked like two building designs shoved together because the workers were so intimidated by stalin that they didn’t ask how he wanted it to look. i cant find it online and i dont know the name of it but if you could help that would be great.

Yes, I know this story. This building does not exist anymore as it’s been recently demolished. It was called "Moskva" Hotel (built in 1935) and situated right next to the Red Square. I put a link below for you with a picture to see how it looked like. If you look you’ll see that the two "wings" of the Hotel are not identical. The historical anecdote goes that Stalin had been presented with two designs both of which he (probably by mistake) endorsed. Architect A.V.Shchusev, who was the head of the project, did not dare ask Stalin which of the designs he preferred more and decided it would be safer to combine two into one. :)

How To Design A Team Building & Training Workshop For Corporate Clients, Consultancy?

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2009 and filed under building design | 1 Comment »

I need to design and develop a 4-day, 12 hr/day management seminar plus workshop for mid-level corporate executives. I’m from the HR dept (recently promoted), and while I’m good at communications — i.e., I can deliver the message effectively — I have a hard time designing training modules that will make the job easier and effective. Would appreciate it if you could provide resources and links to help design, develop and conduct workshops effectively. I’ll be happy if these ideas could apply to private consultancy practice as well.

Executive leadership seminars are a two-point agenda: (a) to bring in management participants, and (b) to convert those participants into paying clients (or effective mployees). The first part is a sales and marketing function; it’s the second where the HR comes in to take up the cudgels for his/her company.

The best way to design and develop a workshop or seminar is to start with modules that have already been developed. If you’re looking to conduct a seminar / workshop on say Corporate Culture and Ethics, the worst you can do is start from scratch. Never do that. You’ll just waste precious time. What you should do is to look out for someone within your company or elsewhere who has already developed a similar module and then, customize it to your requirements.

By customize, I don’t been copy or steal from it. I mean, look for ideas and inspiration from a work that’s already there on paper. Look at how that person visualized his workshop and conceptualized the ideas related to it. What were the specific things he implemented, and in what order? What were his unique experiences, priorities and constraints? What were the problems, roadblocks and overlooked factors that he later realized and rectified. Also, did he have a last-minute change of mind, change of design, change of team even — and what was the time frame within which he got the workshop designed, developed and ready for corporate consumption?

There’s nothing like third-party experience to gain a first hand knowledge of workshop design. Presentation skills workshops, business writing workshops, sales presentation training, coaching workshops and corporate team building activities all become successful (and effective) only through idea brainstorms and smart customization.

Is a triangular building design best for withstanding an earthquake?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under building design | 2 Comments »

Describe y or y not plz

Triangular structures are "stiff," i.e., they resist bending. However, the energy imparted to a building during an earthquake has to be dissipated somehow, and a stiff, rigid building actually has to be built stronger than one that can bend, which increases cost and limits the height of such a building.

Therefore, a less stiff building is actually more desirable, since it will also resist earthquakes, but provides a taller building for the same cost or materials.

Any suggestions on building a Komatik (Inuit sled), i.e. design plans accessible on the internet?

Posted by admin on November 17th, 2009 and filed under building design | 1 Comment »

I am looking for design plans to build my own komatik (sled used by Eastern Arctic Inuit)…any suggested websites or books?

Short of the library, my suggestion would be this website: http://inquiry.net/outdoor/winter/gear/sleds/eskimo2.htm

They have several types of sleds there, including detailed pictures. It’s used by Boy Scouts a lot.
