Is it OK to have white & oak baseboards in the house? How do you make a smooth transition in an open design?

Posted by admin on November 11th, 2009 and filed under house design | 2 Comments »

Our foyer, hallway, & dining room have oak baseboards and oak trim around the doors and the door frames. The problem is the house is an open design so the hallway goes into the kitchen and family room, sharing one of the walls. The baseboards and trim in the kitchen and family room are white. I want to keep the white baseboards in those rooms but I like the oak in the other rooms. Would white baseboards look OK butting up against oak door frames? If not, is there a way to make a smoother color transition on the shared hallway wall where oak goes into the kichen corner where the trim is white?
If I paint the trim around the door, would it look OK to leave just the door frames/jamb oak?
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. I’m going to be putting in a new floor and when I put baseboards back up I want to do it right the first time.

We have white walls and an open space concept as well. The exact same situation you describe. We opted to install white base boards where needed and we painted all the doors and frames white..or replaced existing ones with white ones. Our solution was much more expensive than leaving wood doors, frames, baseboards etc., but the final effect was very nice and well worth the money.

Note: We had professional painters work with all the wood and they removed each piece, door, baseboard etc. and did all the sanding, priming and painting with appropriate "type" paints.

How much does it cost to design your own house and how does it work?

Posted by admin on November 2nd, 2009 and filed under house design | 2 Comments »

I can’t find any houses that I like, I want to design my own house is it really hard?? and how much would it cost??

Designing your house doesn’t cost anything. When I built my house 5 years ago, I found a plan online that was sort of what I was looking for. I made some changes, and drew a new plan with all of the dimensions. I then had a draftsman put the plan on CAD for me, which is where the cost comes in. He charged me $400 to draw it in CAD, then anytime I need copies of the print for bids, permits, etc, I went to a graphics company for copies at $4 each. The plan was detailed enough that I was able to obtain permits. My framing contractor took my plan to the lumber yard, where one of the guys there was able to draw a structural plan which was used to actually build the house. Hope this helps.

what’s the difference between modern zen and Japanese minimalist house design?

Posted by admin on October 25th, 2009 and filed under house design | 1 Comment »

Well, from what I have seen, Japanese minimalist is making sure there are no objects to stop you in your path. Aparently a culture thing concerning the quest to reach ones goal. Also, Japanese minimalist is usually low to the ground, and and very open.

Modern zen flows together extremely well. Often using earth tones, and creating a feeling of belonging and balance within the home. Modern zen seems to mostly deprived its style from Japanese minimalist, but of course modernized it.

Modern zen in a way is like Japanese minimalist in the fact that they both have that sense of open space and freedom.

Hi i need a front steel or iron any gate design for my house ,i am planning for some new design for my house gate some thing different . can u plz help me,my requirements are 165height,375width,waiting for your reply

Are those measurements inches? Any metalsmith will have a book of his work. Go to several and see what they have for inspiration. They tend to be aritstic and hopefully some synergistic juices will start to flow. Iron and metal are very organic and can take any form you wish. I’ve seen them worked into literally, garden plants. Is there a particular thing you are passionate about? have a favorite sport, plant, or something natural that is of significnce to you? This is the entrance and your public statement to the world. What do you wish the world to know about you? If all else fails, a family crest, an animal that represents the family name, or your initials will do nicely.
