I want to study Interior Design as a BA, but most art and design institutes ask the candidates to do those practical exercises as part of their entrance exam.
1. What are you suppose to do in them?
2. Do I need to be very skilled in sketching or is a simple training good enough?
Many thanks in advance!
In addition to what the first person said, you may want to practice doing some journal entries where you observe your surroundings and write what you see. While my school did not require a portfolio or entrance exam until after the first year in the program (we were cut from 80 students to 40 students after taking a year’s worth of classes), our portfolio required us to have journal entries where we just wrote about design in everyday life. I would imagine that on an exam they may do something like show you a picture of a building or other enttity and ask you to write about the it and the emotions that it evokes. I’m not talking about sappy writing or saying "the building made me happy", but just things like, "they way the two roof lines merged together asymmetrically further emphasized the energy the architect was trying to create, and that was continued by the activity inside". Some type of BS like that. I would basically make sure your ability to draw, your sense of scale, and your writing ability are tops before entering an exam.
i love designing rooms and all that so i googled interior design games and all that came up was barbie and sites for 6 year olds!! does anyone know any good games about interior design? please tell me!

Im looking for games like you are too so let me know if you find any.
My girlfriend is a recent college graduate in interior design. She moved to minneapolis and has tried a lot of architecture firms to see who is hiring but to no avail. She is very upset that she cant find a job in her major because of the lack of hosuing and commecial starts in the current economy. What other companies could she work for with that major or other jobs she should look for?
I know people who went to school for interior design. Most of them worked for stores in NYC setting up window displays.
I opened up my own Interior Design business with a business partner. Who it’s a designer too. I have my site advertised in 7 different other sites and I see that people looks at the website daily. All of my friends who have visited the website, love the work they see! What’s going on?
in this day and age who has money?
I am getting a new place so need have some ideas. Does anyone know some good website for interior design?

I am an Interior Designer who would like to specialize in helping contractors design new homes (presold or spec). I currently work for a design center that offers cabinets, carpet, tile, hardood & slab countertops. I feel that I could be a single source for a contractor to go to for design help (since a lot of them don’t want to deal with this end of it). I could also select paint colors, appliances, lighting & plumbing fixtures.
I would love any ideas on how to market contractors!
Good Idea, Erika!
My late mother really broke into that market when she did a "Street of Dreams" home. This is where high end contractors build a number of spec homes and dress them to the hilt. They get more "lookers" and therefore, future contracts. Mom got a great deal of exposure, too and formed a relationship with that builder that lasted a lifetime.
Check with any/all building contractor organizations in the area, or large Realtors or perhaps even Building Supply centers. I believe the one she was involved with, was arranged through a large Realtor, who owned a large plot they were subdividing… The Street of Dreams was at the front and the rest of the lots were "for sale".

I am going to be starting college this fall, and im some what interested in interior design. How successful of a career would i have with the states of things right now. Is that a prominate field to go into right now?
Interior design is a career that seems like a good idea at the time but when you start seeing the creativity of all of the other people, unless you are confident with your talent, second guessing is the next feeling that you will experience.
I went to a fine arts college and saw very few people go into certain fields that use to be booming. Interior design was one of them because the academic advisor kept the students focused on home and garden design. When one of the students graduated, I felt sorry for her but she did look past what her counselor was saying a got a job in a major department store decorating windows.
If you see how far interior design can go or if you can incorporate something else with it to make yourself more marketable than the average student then it would be great for you.
