WHAT IS WATTS PER SQ FEET IN DESIGN OF POWER REQUIREMENT IN RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PREMISES?

Posted by admin on April 8th, 2010 and filed under residential design | 2 Comments »

It is a system used to make an educated guess at the maximum demand on the electrical supply to various types of buildings. A house built in a area that is never hot or cold and uses a wood burning stove, might be rated at "x" Watts per square foot. If the house has a floor area of 1,000 sq ft, the maximum demand would be x,000 Watts. These ratings are available from various building organisations and are based on surveys. They vary a lot of place to place because they take account of the climate, the thermal characteristics of the building materials and the gross size of the building. Calculating the maximum demand by this method is often done for the purpose of estimating the size of the street transformer that will be needed in a new estate in the early stages of planning but more accurate calculations are still needed to determine the final figures.

Where can I get the architectural and MEP design drawings (aka blue prints) for a home in Texas, USA?

Posted by admin on February 5th, 2010 and filed under residential design | 2 Comments »

I am currently looking for a home for my family. I am an engineer, so I am very interested in seeing the Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design drawings of the residential homes that we are looking at.

Is it possible that there is a government place that keeps all this stuff on file?

It is possible they are on file where they were submitted at the permitting office. I would try there 1st and if they don’t, they should be able to send you where they are kept. Depending on how old the house is, it may have been purged. If you can find out the builder of the home, they may have it as well.

What site as info about "green" concrete manufacturers for residential applications?

This concrete will be use for walls, flooring, countertops…
I’m in the Environmental Design class and need this info for my project. It would be great if the info contains their level of standards of sustainability. Thank you!

Although an older article this does share some insight.

Good Luck

I want to design a professional logo for my business. What software do you recommend in the $100-$500 range?

Posted by admin on December 6th, 2009 and filed under residential design | 2 Comments »

It’s a residential design/build business. I have a strong CAD background, so I should be able to catch on to the concepts quickly. The program should allow for importing and manipulation of different fonts, images, graphic drawings, etc. I’d like to be able to develop something for business cards, signs in front of homes, billboards, ads for magazines, merchandise, stationary, etc. So, ideally, the program should be able to lay out and export the design most commonly required for these things. In the future, I’d like to use the designs for a website. Thanks in advance for your help!

Gimp isn’t a vector based graphics program, it’s basically like Photoshop. What you want is Illustrator, or some other vector graphics program, since you obviously want scalability. You can get the fully functional free trial from the Adobe website, if you anticipate your needs to fit within the 30 day limit.
Another option is to try a freeware program like Inkscape:

Personally, I’d just draw it in AutoCAD, then export as an EPS and then color and add effects in Illustrator. Well, depending on what you had in mind.

Looking for the names of high-end residential lighting manufacturers?

Posted by admin on December 4th, 2009 and filed under residential design | 2 Comments »

I am in a lighting course, and the teacher hasn’t done a very good job of providing us with names of high end lighting manufacturers for the interior design industry. Does anyone have any suggestions for quality light fixtures? (We’re talking better than the Home Depot or any of those regular retailers) This has to be stuff that is internet accessible, because it’s for a project that I’m having to do from home. Thanks.

Waterford makes beautiful light fixtures, lamps, ceiling lights, and Chandeliers. Theey are beautiful especially with a dimmer switch :)

Can you give me some help getting hired for drafting?

Posted by admin on November 29th, 2009 and filed under residential design | 1 Comment »

My wife is having trouble getting hired into a good position with a drafting firm in Fort Worth. She didn’t even get a bite while in San Antonio. I’ve suggested she visit an employment agent of some sort, but is there some sort of certification which would help convince local firms she knows what she’s doing?. She has an old associates degree, but she has 8 years of recent experience in contract drafting with a construction firm specializing in metal building construction for industrial, commercial, and even residential designs including estimation.

Howdy, Texas! Mineral Wells, here!!!

Try Cantex at the JR Horton building in FWorth. They need new blood and the engineer there might be interested in your wife. I think it’s the 27th floor.

That’s our main corporate office, but the plants are located here in MWells. There’s very little over the plant managers’ position out here.

The air is cleaner, tho.

How do i become a residential interior designer?

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2009 and filed under residential design | 1 Comment »

I’m still in high school, but i’m seriously considering interior design as my career once i leave school.
i was just wandering how you get into this kind of business, what courses i should take at uni or school, where i should go, etc.
please help!!

Contact the American Society of Interior Designers. They have a really good student program that will help you with all sorts of information on becoming a professional designer. You actually can join as a student and then attend meeting and seminars in your area, plus receive their publications and discounts.

If you’re serious, your first step should be getting to know this orgnaization:

Good luck.
