What is the definition (or examples) of each of those 4 as it pertains to architecture or interior design projects or real estate? For example, is a restaurant considered commercial or is that hospitality?
it pertains to the type of occupancy and permitted use by the zoning regulation as set forth in the general and specific plan in the planning department.
What is the difference and definition of commercial, retail, hospitality, residential architecture?
What does it take to be a residential designer and what are the limits?
I’ve been told so many different things I’m all confused I’ve been told that you don’t need any education outside of highschool which I don’t believe but I’ve also been told that you need licence and 2 years exsperiance. comeing to limits I’ve been told that it must be under 3 stories ok I can dill with that but I was told that you can’t design a home more then 1500 to 2000 square feet now does anyone knows the limits, I hope there is someone out here to help me. thanks if you can.
Isn’t that the same as being an Architect?
What kind of work do civil egineering in residential projects?
all the design houses do architects and houses are build by carpenters,so a civil engineering can work in residential projects? and what they do on it?
residential projects like lots new houses just houses
Civil Engineers would work on the infrastructure.
Roads, drainage etc. They could also be involved in any slope stability, maybe a dam wall and if the ground was not good the foundations.
What is a good size residential house?
Ok so I am messing around in my architectural class, my teacher wants us to design a house. Now if you were a middle class customer of mine, how many bedrooms and bathrooms would you want? how about the garage, 2-car or 3? what about a game room or something. I am just looking for some ideal house sizes so I can start.
I would start of designing a 3000 sqft. house. I like sprawling ranches, but a center hall colonial is what everyone is building these days. a two car garage is plenty, but i would extend it about five feet to have garage stairs leeding to a basement (very convienient). Living Room/Dining Room/ Den or greatroom/ Office or keeping room/ 4 beds with master suite/& 2 1/2 baths. Good luck
What will our residential streets and neighborhoods look like in 100 years?
I’m trying to get an idea for how our current homes and streets will look in the near future for a design class.
Any ideas?
I think some neighborhoods houses would be more bigger, have more options, and up to date. & Some neighbor[HOODS] will probably be more trashier, and broke down houses.
Why do commercial buildings have flat roofs and residential buildings have triangular?
If I ever get the opportuinty to design my dream home, I would like it to have a flat roof. I like the look of hard shapes, and I also place importance on standing out from the crowd. I was wondering about the pros and cons of such a residence.
I understand that large buildings such as a walmart would need a flat roof for obvious reasons, but even small buildings like gas stations have them.
Is there any financial advantage to either? heating costs? maintainace? materials?
mostly, commercial buildings have flat roofs because they dont need attic space…they can afford steel bar joists to handle snow loads and all the roof drains required…i like flat roofs but not practical in this snow belt…pitched roof is cheaper and more practical and you gotta fill your attic with stuff…where will your grandkids go to laugh at all the old clothes you used to wear…
architect vs. residential designer?
When I was younger I always thought I wanted to be an architect. Now that I work in a firm I am having regrets I want to get back into single family residential design which I was doing before working with an architectural firm. I found a certificiation for home designers (not interior designers) as a "certified professional building designer" has anyone heard of this or have this certification? What can I expect form being a designer vs. an architect?
You will make a lot more money in design than in architecture. We have both and my partner also found that after obtaining his architecture degree he wasn’t happy in it as a profession. I’m not familiar with the certification because in the state where we are located an interior design degree is necessary to get the license and be listed with the ASID But, having the architecture degree and experience to bring into a residential design business is certainly a powerful background to offer clients. Do some research about the certification (check to see whether designers in your area are requesting or requiring this certification for positions they are offering to determine how valuable it is in your market). With residential and commercial design, you will have more work than you know what to do with when you are good because 80% of your business will come through 20% of your clients simply by referral.
Make certain you set up accounts with the trade showrooms, establish a top drawer list of contractors who are as dedicated to quality performance as you are and make certain you have the state board of equalization paperwork and any deposits required before you open for business. Filing a DBA and getting a business license are also first steps that can be done while you are earning your certificate. That way, you can hit the ground running.
Best wishes, it is a rewarding business and profession.
anyone know of any online colleges which offer residential design?
every time i serch for it it sends me to schools with only interior design if i wanted that i would have asked for it. i want to design the whole house.

What would be a good name for my business?
I’m a residential designer and my last name is DeWitt and well I live around Gates North Carolina but the only name I can think of right now is DeWitt Residential Design. what do you think would be a good name and if you would like could yall tell me what yall like in your dream home and what your favorite style of home is. I like Prairie style.
DeWitt is pronounced with a long e so Its kinda like Deeee Witt
I like the name that you have already proposed. As for what I’d like in a dream home: An upstairs (second floor) laundry room and a second Master Bedroom. I like the traditional colonial style and the "new take" on the Classic Victorian style.
"We do it all" could be your catch phrase.
Can the California Highway Patrol patrol residential streets and give citations.?
I live in Ventura Ca and I see California Highway Patrol cruising around the city streets following cars doing illegal u-turns to pull people over for minor infractions on residential streets. I thought that CHP were designed for the freeway patrol and PD was for the city patrol. If CHP is patrolling our city streets who is patrolling our freeways??
Of course they can patrol those streets. You need to remember they are responsible for all roadways in the state. And the old argument that they are only for the "highway" isn’t right. Even if it was, a highway is defined as any road open to the public. CA vehicle code 360. It defines what a "highway" is:
"Highway" is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly
maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of
vehicular travel. Highway includes street.
