It has become 'iconic' of Sydney. There are many such structures around the world that have come to symbolize the places they are--the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Leaning Tower, the Great Pyramid, the Statue of Liberty, the Big Ben tower, etc. When you see a picture of the Opera House (and maybe the bridge) you know it's Sydney. I'm sure that was one of its design goals, and very successful. There are other definitions of 'success' of course, like did it pay back its cost? Is it a good place to see an opera? Is it economical to maintain?
