Fencing material is very good, which would be 2 x 8, more than likely. Be sure to layer it so that each "unit" extends downward from the outside one by 1.5 inches or so, so the bats can land there and crawl up. If you intend to suspend it from a high perch, make sure it is not too heavy to handle. Board spacing should not all be the same. Some spaces 1/2 inch, some 3/4. They are messy devils, so put it somewhere with ease of cleaning up the guano. Also, they tend to squirt just before they land, so not near a window.
